Although I’ve known Kai for only six months, it seems like I’ve known
him since we were both kids. I suppose most people know by now that he
lives on land he first came to cherish as a small child from
Washington, through visits to his granddad’s mountain farm. That was a
big coincidence for me, because I have a similar history up here in the
Catoctins. No doubt, Kai too spent hours in those days following deer
trails through the woods, watching water spiders, and wondering what
those old dry-stone walls that run through the forested land are doing
there. Suffice it to say that here is a man who loves this county –
and has steadily loved it nearly all his life – as if it were family.
I believe Kai really understands our county. He also has a vision that
he’s doggedly determined to realize. He knows every nook and cranny of
Frederick, and he’s made it his business for years to apply his
prodigious knowledge of and experience with planning, preservation, and
land use to his work for Frederick. Because of his commitment to us
ordinary folks and to truly representative government that listens and
responds to the people it serves, I think he’s tried to meet just about
every individual resident of the county! I should also point out that
Kai is very smart and has a realistic grasp of the complexity of the
growth issues that we face: he’s just not the simple-minded
“no-growther” that many of the developer crowd try to portray him to
be. I guess you might say that Kai Hagen is the “gen-u-ine article.”
I certainly plan to vote for him in November and hope you will too.

I've known Kai ever since we began crossing paths at all the odd places and events that people go to "fix" things in the community. Kai is much more focused on actually sitting through endless, boring public meetings than I, since I do not have that kind of patience. Thank goodness for Kai. I'm a licensed architect, certified planner, urban designer, mediator, and now, principally an implementer of all that I've learned -- a different...
