There are many great people in public service, and support of one should never be taken as a denegration of another; however, my personal convictions compel me to write about a special opportunity to consider someone for County Commissioner who, in many communities, might never consider running for elective office. That person is Kai Hagen.
It isn't often that one encounters a candidate who speaks, thinks, and fights for many of the same issues and concerns. For me, Kai Hagen is that candidate. When you have a moment, please take a moment to read his materials or his columns, and I believe that you will too.
Whether your concern is school overcrowding wrought by poorly planned residential development, convoluted statistics, ill-advised subsidies and giveaways to land developers, or congested roadways, or the degradation of our environment, Kai Hagen has been at the forefront of the battle to prevent the continuing assaults against our infrastructure -- at taxpayer expense.
Kai Hagen knows that growth will occur, but that it must be reasoned and sustainable growth, tempered by rational minds, with the goal of making certain that the burden of that growth is not shouldered by any one group more than another and that, in the process, our quality of life is not sacrificed.
Frederick County spends $8,619 a year for each student. As you walk around your neighborhood, think about how many children there really are per household (in my home there are two - $17,238). Now add the costs of providing police services, roads, water and sewer, parks and recreation, and more. While everyone may be entitled to their own opinions in the great and endless debating over growth, everyone is not entitled to their own facts. And one fact is certain -- there is no way that a new home will ever pay for itself in taxes.
Growth happens. When it does, all voices should be heard -- not just the monied interests. Kai Hagen's only special interest -- is you.
Kai Hagen knows that government is meant to serve the people -- that there are few more noble callings than pledging one's self to the service of others. Kai Hagen will work tirelessly for the people of Frederick County.
Kai Hagen is on the record -- you've probably seen his many well- written columns on many of the subjects you and I hold very dear to our hearts -- if you haven't -- "Google" him. You'll like what you read. He is an extremely intelligent, thoughtful and capable man.
You will have more than one choice for the Board of County Commissioners in the upcoming election. Kai Hagen will bring a fresh perspective, and compassionate leadership to County Government. Kai Hagen has my support, and I hope you will grant him every consideration, as one of your choices.

I love Frederick! I have high hopes for Frederick County's future with the expectation that Kai Hagen will become one of its commissioners. I respect Kai's experience and trust Kai's ability to thoroughly weigh the appropriateness of how decisions might affect all of us.
