Oak Acres - 21701

I came to Frederick County a little over three years ago after nearly 40 years in Maryland. I lived in Montgomery County through the glory years - when their school system was second to none in the country - when the county services were more than ample and not too costly - and when traffic was not a mind numbing obstacle that threatened one's sanity.

Having recently retired - I had time to spend on local Frederick issues. First on the agenda was a large developer's inclusion of our neighborhood roads in solving his traffic problems. This was really a "no-brainer" - the roads to be included in a major traffic increase were old farm lanes - not suitable for the "collector" road status stipulated by the developer.

This early introduction to the workings of the staff at the Division of Planning, the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners was a real eye-opener. No matter what seemed to be the right solution - and no matter how many citizens and others weighed in on the side of common sense or fiscal sanity - the current BoCC majority, in their infinite wisdom - prevailed.

Then came the bigger picture - the New Market Regional Plan.

Early on it became apparent that almost every vote of the BoCC regarding development started at a three - two split (regardless of previous agreements with the planning staff, or the Planning Commission) in favor of the enormous proposed increases. The current majority repeatedly and stubbornly ignored information projecting widespread road failures and chronic congestion, over-crowded schools and a host of other problems. The experience of tilting against the windmills of the BoCC left me, and more than a few others, frustrated, dispirited and apathetic.

Along the way, I made the acquaintance of Kai Hagen. Kai helped our group find a common voice and offered wisdom and inspiration in making not only the BoCC, but the other residents of eastern Frederick county, hear and consider our concerns.

The divide among the pro-development - at any cost (3) and - the responsible growth (2) commissioners brought out the need for a reasonable, honest, straight-thinking person of high repute to run for the office of commissioner. When citizens encouraged Kai to run, he looked within himself and found the courage to serve.

It is now our responsibility to see that he is elected, or suffer the inevitable consequences that have been paraded through our local newspapers of late.

Kai Hagen demonstrates all of the qualities needed to bring a semblance of order to the BoCC. He is informed, articulate, hard-working and above all else has displayed the interest in getting the job done - correctly. If we are to succeed in the future, we must support the most able candidate available - Kai Hagen - and work hard on his behalf, for all of us.

WHY I"M VOTING FOR KAI!

Robert Strasser
Frederick

My original aquaintance with Kai Hagen came several years ago. We were neighbors and both serving as advisors to the Catoctin Land Trust. Together we shared a concern about protecting our regions natural heritage and limiting the excess growth that was transforming Frederick County too quickly and short sightedly into more of the suburban sprawl that has cost Maryland so much of its rural landscape. He has a good mind for detail and pays...
