Carnivals, Fairs and Parades

This evening, three volunteers and I were at the Urbana Carnival. It was hot, but otherwise clear and pleasant.

We had a tent (top only) for shade, a table, an eight foot long "Kai Hagen for Frederick County Commissioner" banner, various items to give away (lapel stickers, bumper stickers...) and a sign up sheet for anyone who wanted to get on the campaign mailing list.

I've spent a number of evenings at carnivals around the county the last few weeks. Unfortunately – since I love carnivals and fairs – I haven't gone on any rides or played any games (with the sole exception of throwing a few balls – unsuccessfully! – to soak Thurmont Mayor Martin Burns).

I was at the Walkersville carnival for three evenings, at Baker Park on the 4th of July, at the Middletown carnival for a couple of nights, at a parade in Emmitsburg, and in the Thurmont Parade last week.

Being in the Thurmont parade was especially fun. A couple of volunteers carried the banner in front of the car (our family van, actually, which had a few bumper stickers and a couple of larger magnetic signs on the side), my sons tossed hard candy to kids along the parade route, and I walked along, saying hello, shaking hands, and passing out a few hundred lapel stickers. Folks along the route were very friendly, and some here there offered enthusiastic cheers of support.

When we passed the announcers stand, it was nice to hear him mention that I live in the Thurmont area.

Most evenings, there have been a few volunteers keeping me company and helping out, including seven and nine on two consecutive evenings in Walkersville.

The events offer a good opportunity to get my name out there, to meet folks, and to speak with those who come up to learn a bit more, ask some questions, chat about a specific issue that concerns them, and so on.

Weather permitting, we'll be at the Urbana carnival again tomorrow evening, and again on Thursday (July 20th). If you're planning on attending the carnival, please drop by and say hello!

WHY I'M VOTING FOR KAI!

Jim and Teresa Gallion
Walkersville

As Kai Hagen showed us around his own little piece of Frederick County it was clear how important the environment is to him. He pointed out where the trilliums pop up in the spring and we watched a beaver who didn’t know he was being watched. We’re lucky to have someone like Kai running for County Commissioner. He is thoughtful and intelligent. He has worked in the county system and understands how government can succeed. Kai wants the best for...
