Follow the money

The rhetoric describing positions on growth during the county commissioner election campaign such as "balanced," "common sense," etc., is confusing and potentially misleading. Based on our experience from the past four years, if you really want to know how a candidate would vote on growth issues, just follow the money.

The pre-primary campaign finance reports posted on www.co.frederick.md.us/elections/2006GPCFR.htm and its links tell the story for many candidates. The campaigns of Mike Cady, John Lovell, Billy Shreve, Charles Jenkins and Thomas Henderson are all significantly financed by businesses and individuals representing the development, real estate and building industries' interests, including some from outside the county.

We already have plenty of evidence of John Thompson and Jan Gardner's commitment to control residential growth to levels that will not further degrade the quality of life in the county. Their campaigns as well as those of David Gray, Richard Floyd, Kai Hagen, and Ed Lulie (who have similar views on growth) show a dearth of donations from those interests that stand to profit from high growth rates.

So when you vote in the primary on Sept. 12, please do your homework so you know where the candidates truly stand on the issues.

In the “early” years coaching at the YMCA, Kai always made sure everyone got equal playing time. In...
