Sunday evening, Oct. 8, I attended a remarkable campaign event. Frederick County commissioner candidate Kai Hagen organized a bi-partisan rally at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater and attracted about 150 interested citizens to hear local officials speak about the opportunity we have at the November election.

It surprised me that with this gathering of city and county elected officials and civic leaders there wasn't mention of this event in The Frederick News-Post.

Current BOCC President Lenny Thompson, Commissioner Jan Gardner, and candidate and former Commissioner David Gray took a few moments to speak about cooperation and consensus on the board. They stated that Kai Hagen's high standards, thoughtful input and collaborative attitude would be a welcome addition to the board.

Mayor Martin Burns of Thurmont and Frank Johnson of Mount Airy each spoke about Kai's fact-based earnest drive to keep Frederick County the place we want to live, with specifics on ways Kai has worked with them and held them accountable.

Gary Nelson, Mount Airy town councilman, introduced the speakers and about two dozen other civic leaders. The group of supporters present included commissioner candidate Richard Floyd, former Frederick Mayor Jennifer Dougherty, Walkersville Burgess Ralph Whitmore, and Frederick Alderman Marcia Hall, to name a few.

We are lucky to have intelligent, energetic people who care enough about Frederick County to want to run for public office and serve in the best interest of the rest of us. This event was an hour I'm glad I didn't miss. I believe there's hope for good government.

Until the day that several utility companies decided they wanted to build power plants in Frederick County. Since one of these proposed sites was literally within view from my back deck - I became a 'community activist' overnight. My life changed, and my little...
